Artscape’s Creative Spacemaking Workshop will bring together top practitioners and highlight innovative partnerships that have successfully anchored creative communities within sustainable and affordable spaces. The workshop offers leading advice, hands-on tools and a chance to meet the experts during interactive sessions on topics such as; vision development, feasibility analysis, project planning, finance and fundraising, community engagement and governance.

Pre-workshop Event – A New Place in Time: Pecha Kucha Night in Oshawa

The Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat" is also the name for this exciting fast-paced presentation format. With just seven minutes each, presenters will showcase their ideas on re-imagining the City of Oshawa.  The event with take place at the Thirsty Monk Gastro Pub, 21 Celina Street, Oshawa, ON starting at 6:00 p.m. on November 22, 1010.

9:15 a.m.         Pre-Project Development

Tim Jones, President & CEO, Artscape

A presentation on pre-project planning and feasibility approaches that focuses on assessing organizational readiness, the relationship between strategic organizational planning and space planning, understanding markets and community needs, undertaking business and facility assessments, generating effective communications strategies, and establishing the development team.

10:15 a.m.       Bringing Community to the Table: Community Engagement

Roscoe Handford, Wychwood Community Animator, Green Barn Market Manager

The role of the community in the evolution of the Artscape Wychwood Barns – a 60,000 sq. ft. multifaceted community centre where arts and culture, environmental leadership, heritage preservation, urban agriculture and affordable housing come together.

The presentation will be delivered from various perspectives on fundraising campaign planning and management and innovative financing models for capital projects. The focus of the session will be on fundraising feasibility assessment, organizational structure, board development, prospect identification, volunteer management, and building donor relationships.

A presentation on the primary development stages from concept development, through design to construction management. The presentation will focus on understanding the roles of key consultants, the process of site selection, determining the building program and capital project budgeting.

Spacemaking projects require the right mix of people to move a project from inception to completion.  Creating a project team is considered a cornerstone of any successful project.  The panel will be led through key questions focused on the complexities of executing a project and dealing with the “unknowns” that accompany cultural development projects.   

2:15 p.m.         Local Spotlight Creative Spaces Building: Located in downtown Oshawa, the   Creative Spaces Building has a footprint of 5,000 sq ft and could be a home for the growing arts  community and organizations focused on community transformation, sustainability, prosperity and liveability. In recent years, the demand for the provision of artist space, event and performance space has been on the rise in Durham Region. The City of Oshawa welcomes new ideas for this incredible development opportunity that could be a 'community hub'.

2:35 p.m.         Arts Incubator of Kansas City:  Culture and Job Creation

Jeff Becker, Executive Director

Founder Jeff Becker will share the successful story of the Arts Incubator of Kansas City.  Since 2001, the Arts Incubator has assisted nearly 160 artists turn their work into viable businesses.  Artists have access to individual studios, common workplaces and professional development programs.  The emergence of the Arts Incubator as an integral component of the Crossroads Arts District - one of the top arts communities in the US – and its recent expansion will be presented.

3:30 p.m.         Workshop Commons

In small groups, participants will rotate through thematically-based interactive sessions led by specific teams of faculty members. These intimate sessions will allow participants to bring project-specific challenges to faculty and peers for discussion.
